The basic roll of the Barn/Facility Care Staff of Leatherstocking Veterinary Services is to provide excellence in all the tasks necessary to care for the horses, to maintain the barns and the grounds, ensure smooth clinic operations, and to provide client/patient services.

Responsibilities

  • Follow feeding instructions written by the Veterinarian
  • Daily turnout of horses.
  • February through mid-July is equine breeding season. Handling mares and foals is a must. August through September is when yearlings are sale prepped and require handling.
  • It is the Barn Care Staff’s responsibility to ensure that the horses always have clean water and hay available to them at all times.
  • Candidates must have the ability to work in all weather conditions.
  • In the winter months, it is necessary to haul water in and out to all paddocks that hold horses during the day
  • Cleaning stalls according to Leatherstocking Veterinary Service standards
  • Transferring horses appropriately between stalls, turnout paddocks, and trailers when needed.
  • Keeping all areas of the barns and grounds swept and raked.
  • In the winter months, shoveling snow and dispensing salt may be required.
  • Grooming and cleanliness of animals
  • Working weekends may be required
  • Overall tidiness of barns and treatment area.
  • Handling of stallions may be required.

Qualifications/Experience

  • Experience with large animal care is required
  • Some stallion, mare and foal handling preferred.
  • Experience working in a barn similar in size to Leatherstocking Veterinary Service preferred.
  • Must be able to operate a tractor and skid steer or be willing to learn.
  • Must be able to lift a minimum of 50lbs.
  • Must be self-motivated
  • Reliable transportation and a valid driver’s license.
